Project Overview

The team at Women's Health Magazine came to us with a goal that fit their brand perfectly. They wanted to encourage readers to explore sports and fitness outside their usual routines. For their 2019 winter challenge, they decided to show something real. They wanted to follow their own editorial team as they started personal 30-day fitness journeys.

The magazine needed top-quality photos of each team member doing their chosen activity at different spots around Cape Town. We had just one day to shoot the whole team while keeping the high standard needed for a national magazine publication. We took a strategic approach to this creative content to ensure every shot served their clear business purpose.

The Challenge

This shoot came with a few hurdles that we had to clear quickly:

  • We only had one day to get photos of many people in different Cape Town spots.
  • The team members were more used to being behind the scenes than in front of a camera.
  • We worked with a small crew and a tight budget for such a big feature.
  • We had to move between many venues while the clock was ticking.
  • Cape Town weather can change in a second, which made outdoor shots tricky.

The Solution

We knew we had to be very prepared to make this work. Before the day started, we spent a lot of time planning so we wouldn't run into delays. We chatted with the Women's Health team to learn about each person's personality and their fitness goals. This helped us figure out the best way to approach each shot during the development phase.

We scouted locations across the city to find spots that matched each journey. We also mapped out the best routes to avoid traffic and get the most out of our time. We picked lighting gear that could handle both gyms and the outdoors quickly. This meant we didn't have to spend ages setting up at every new spot.

Helping the team feel relaxed was a big part of our job. Since they are not pro models, we focused on making them feel confident. We spent time with each person before we started, explaining what we wanted to do. Our goal was to catch real moments that would inspire readers. We looked for natural looks and honest effort rather than something that looked staged.

Even with the rush, we did not cut corners on quality. We used professional setups that we could change fast for different settings. This kept everything looking the same across all the locations. We shot from many angles to give the magazine team plenty of choices for their final layout.

Results and Impact

The shoot turned out better than we hoped. We finished with a large set of photos that caught the spirit of the winter challenge. Each person’s story came through clearly while the whole set looked like it belonged together. The magazine used the images across several pages to tell a story that felt real to their readers

We delivered everything on time and within the budget, even with the tight schedule. The project showed that we can work fast and still keep our standards high. It helped us build a stronger bond with Media24 and showed we can handle big jobs under pressure. The magazine was able to share their message using photos that their audience could really relate to.

Looking Forward

This project is a great example of how we handle editorial work. It shows that good planning and a friendly approach can solve big problems. The Women's Health shoot reminded us that the best photos are not always about being perfect. They are about finding a real connection and telling a story that people care about. Whether we are working with models or real people, we always focus on creating images that help our clients reach their goals and speak clearly to their audience.
