Making a Health Brand Sound Human

MediaSocial Media
2024

Ajuda had a health-tech mission that sounded like a brochure every single time they tried to write it down. We left the big cameras at home, filmed twenty brand videos on mobile, and built a social presence that sounds like a person rather than a datasheet.

Twenty videos, filmed on a phone

Ajuda Health is a South African health-tech startup with a genuinely useful mission and, like a lot of startups, a habit of describing it in language that made it sound like a brochure. Every time the mission got written down, it lost the person behind it. They needed brand video production that felt human, on a budget that ruled out a full crew, so they came to ThinkStory and we did something simple: we left the big cameras at home and filmed twenty brand videos on a phone. Twenty small films gave them a library to post from for months, not a single launch and then silence.

  • A mission that read like a datasheet whenever it was written down
  • A startup budget with no room for a big production
  • A social presence that needed to sound like a person, not a company

A health-tech mission that sounded like a brochure

Health-tech has a language problem: the more important the thing, the more it tends to get buried in jargon. Ajuda's actual story, what they do and who it helps, was warm and clear when someone just said it out loud. We have seen it again and again, that a founder explaining their own product in plain words is more convincing than any script. Our job was to keep it that way, and to stop it stiffening into corporate copy the moment a camera appeared.

Why we left the big cameras at home

A phone is less intimidating than a film crew, and it showed. Filming on mobile kept the videos loose and real, the way Ajuda's team actually talk, rather than stiff and over-produced. It also kept the cost down, which mattered for a startup, and it meant we could shoot a lot: twenty short brand videos instead of one polished hero film that tried to say everything at once.

A feed that sounds like a person

The videos fed a social presence built to sound like a person rather than a datasheet. Instead of announcements, the feed carries short, plain, human clips that explain what Ajuda does and why it matters, in the founders' own words. It reads like someone talking to you, and for a health brand asking people to trust it, that is the whole point. A founder on camera earns more trust than a voiceover ever could. The reach numbers are theirs to measure, but the tone is not in doubt: it sounds like Ajuda, not like a pamphlet about Ajuda.

Storytelling on a startup budget

Producing brand video on a small budget is less about the camera than the approach: shoot on what you have, keep it human, and make many small pieces rather than one expensive one. For Ajuda that meant twenty videos filmed on a phone and a feed that finally sounds like the people behind the company. The mission stopped reading like a brochure the moment it was spoken instead of written.

Common questions.

How do you produce brand video on a small budget?

Shoot on what you have and make many small pieces rather than one expensive film. For Ajuda Health we filmed twenty brand videos on a phone, which kept the cost down and the videos human, and gave them far more to post than a single hero film would have.

Why film brand videos on a phone?

A phone is less intimidating than a full crew, so people relax and sound like themselves. For a health-tech startup like Ajuda Health that meant videos that felt like a real person talking, not a corporate script, filmed on a startup budget.

What makes good health-tech social media content?

Plain language and real people. Health-tech is easy to bury in jargon, so we built Ajuda a feed of short, human videos in the founders' own words, which is what earns trust from the people a health brand is trying to reach.
